The Benefits of Protein Powders

What is protein powder? Benefits of protein powders…
Protein PowdersI know protein is good for me, but do I need a supplement? Whey, egg, casein and soy which one protein is right for me and what does each one do?
Let’s get the facts straight. Protein exists in virtually everything that moves and makes sounds, or in almost any animal. Primary dietary protein sources include fish, eggs, chicken, pork, beef, venison, buffalo and many other wild animals.
But which is the best source of protein? Ah, the million dollar question. As with any supplement, no protein powder will match what Mother Nature provides on earth. Natural proteins deliver more quality nutrients to your body than any protein powder ever could. Still, protein powders do have their place.
Scientist have come a long way in their development of protein supplements, including how they taste. Even recently, the best you could hope for with a protein shake was that you could choke it down in spite of its chalky taste and consistency. Now they actually taste good. Today there are plenty of protein powders and meal replacement shakes on the market. The key is finding the best quality products with the highest level of bioavailability.
Your primary source of protein should be meat, fish, poultry, eggs and other seafood. The protein source should be organic and grass-fed, free-range or wild. These furnish the body with the highest quality protein, provided that they are not cooked, or cooked very lightly, because heat denatures protein (kills proteins).
Other sources include commercial meats, farm-raised fish, and other genetically modified organisms like soy. Protein also can be found in other foods like nuts, legumes, some veggies and certain grains. However, your best sources of protein for packing on the muscle are organic meat and fish.
Protein shakes or meal replacements should be the last place you should look to fulfill your body’s protein requirements. Although they can be beneficial, remember, nothing beats Mother Nature’s proteins not even a scientist-developed protein for making you healthy and strong. Protein supplements are particularly useful for vegans, vegetarians and non-meat eaters, as well as for people with problems digesting heavy proteins or whose lifestyle prevents them from consuming proteins during the day.
A protein drink or meal-replacement shake is a great morning meal for those get-up-and-go types who only are short on time but understand how important breakfast is to losing fat and gaining muscle. Breakfast is the most important meal of any healthy diet, so a quick protein shake is a must for people who just don’t have time to prepare a good breakfast.
The best protein powders or shakes are made from egg or whey. Use casein, protein from dairy products, sparingly. Avoid soy proteins, as these are the cheapest products you can buy and typically are genetically modified. Genetic modification means scientists have altered the organism from its natural state, a practice discouraged by most non-soy-paid scientists. Do your own independent research if you like, but always consider the source. Take with a grain of salt the comments of "specialists" who are paid by companies to say theirs is the best stuff for your body.
Remember, these are general protein recommendations. If there’s something on this list that you are allergic to, that obviously would not be a good product for you. A food allergy test is recommended before you begin any supplementation program to determine if you have specific allergies and if there are particular substances your body has problems processing.
One last note: All the protein in the world won’t help you if your body is deprived of other nutrients, such as essential vitamins and minerals. For optimal health, make sure you consume enough protein, eat organic and supplement with a great multivitamin.
The Number One Recommended Protein Products that will deliver your body the highest amounts of quality protein. These Supplements will give you the most gains and help you lose the most fat.

Healthy Foods – Grains

grainsThe nutritional value of grain has become the latest craze of many dieters and weight-loss enthusiasts worldwide. Whole grains, like brown rice, contain large amounts of fiber and since it is in unprocessed form, the main components such as bran, endosperm, and germ are all present in each grain.

High-fiber Bran

Bran is practically one of the richest sources of fiber in the entire component of whole grain. Found on the hard-to-digest outer husk of rice, wheat, oats, cereal grains, and so on. Studies show that bran has the capability to prevent major health problems like cancer of the breast, uterus, prostate, and colon; intestinal problems like constipation, and prevent heart attacks.
Aside from wheat, oat bran is full of soluble fiber which turns to gel when combined with water. Experts believe that it helps reduce blood cholesterol levels, and improves glucose metabolism for diabetic patients – reducing the need of insulin, as well as any other medications for it.

Endosperm

Endosperm is the albumin tissue found in seeds. It surrounds the embryo and provides nutrition in the form of starch, proteins, and other nutritious oils to keep it healthy. Compared to bran and germ, endosperm provides the much needed protein for the human body.

Germ

Practically the most nutritious component of whole grains, the germ is the part of the grain wherein the embryo of the plant is found – or simply termed as the heart of the kernel. It contains some proteins, lots of fiber, poly-unsaturated fat, lignans, phyto-estrogens, phenolic compounds, phytic acid, vitamins and minerals needed by the human body.

Refined Grain and Whole Grain

There has been much debate regarding the nutritional value of refined and whole grains. In truth, refined grains lack the original nutrients found in the whole, wherein only the endosperm is left to provide nutrition (as in most cases with flour). Government mandate states that when a grain is refined, all the necessary vitamins and minerals like folic acid should be added to the mix to make it healthier – but synthetic nutrients aren’t really as effective to the body unlike its natural counterpart.
Also, refined grains are easily absorbed into the blood stream which causes an imbalance to sugar and fat levels. Since bran and germ were removed during the milling process, much of the essential fibers are no longer present to provide maximum health benefits.
Whole grains contain the original nutritional value in its structure. High in plant proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, phyto-nutrients, relatively low in fat, and no cholesterol. All of these nutrients work together to reduce the health risks associated with obesity, heart problems attributed to high cholesterol and high blood pressure, bowel disorders, diabetes, and certain types of intestinal and lower body cancers.

Whole Wheat and Weight Loss

Weight-loss experts believed that whole grains are more beneficial to dieters than its refined counterpart. Since refined grains are absorbed faster, the sugar and fat content are easily absorbed and broken down by the body and results in insulin production. This triggers the body to convert carbohydrates into fats and stores it.
Whole grain, on the other hand, regulates the insulin level simply by the fact that it stays in your body longer before it is absorbed and broken down. Also, whole grain eliminates hunger pangs quite common with eating refined grains, and provides the feeling of fullness that reduces food intake – thus aiding to weight loss.
If you are planning to add whole grain to your diet, then you better consider other varieties aside from wheat, these are: oats, brown rice, quinoa, millet, flaxseeds, and pearl barley. These grains are a good source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, high in fiber content and plant-based protein. Also, these grains are filled with iron and other minerals, perfect for dieting and weight loss. Here is a simple recipe using whole wheat that your family will surely enjoy:
Quinoa Crusted Chicken Fingers 2 lbs skinless and boneless chicken sliced in into strips (around .5 to 1 inch thick.
1/2 tsp. of salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
2 egg whites
1-1/2 cups red or white quinoa (cooked)
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (whole wheat)
2 tablespoons of olive oil
Preparation:
1. Using a wax paper or an aluminum foil set the quinoa and sprinkles some breadcrumbs on it.
2. Place egg in a shallow bowl
3. sprinkle chicken with salt, pepper and paprika
4. Dip chicken into the egg, and press onto the quinoa mixture. Make sure that it is entirely covered.
5. Add oil to a pan and warm over high heat. Cook add chicken and cook over medium heat around 4-6 minutes per side until golden brown.

Does Yoga Help to Increase Height?

WipeDrivePro

Most people desire to grow taller. Being tall has a lot of advantages. But most of the time we want to grow taller because of aesthetic reasons. This pushes us to gain height in almost any way possible. And among the things we try to make us grow taller is yoga. So, does it really work? Does yoga help to increase height?
Yoga
Yoga is not just a form of exercise or stretching. It is a way of life. Yoga is a discipline that started in ancient India and was passed down from one generation to another. This discipline is a practice of righteous living and mind-body exercises that encourage physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of an individual. Yoga is a highly effective form of exercise. If done properly, you can notice the changes in your body. With yoga asanas, you become more aware of your body, mind, and surroundings.
Yoga and height
There are certain yoga asanas, or exercises, that help in increasing one’s height. Other asanas do not directly or actually increase a person’s height but instead, improves the individual’s posture. With better posture, one will now look taller and better. This is what usually happens with most forms of exercises. It improves your posture by correcting and strengthening your spine. But don’t underestimate an improved posture on its ability to make you grow taller. A properly aligned spine has a better chance of growing longer.
However, there are also asanas that do increase a person’s height. They don’t really lengthen the bones because bone lengthening can only be done through surgery. What yoga does to make you grow taller is it improves blood circulation, boosts energy levels, and clears the digestive system. With these three improvements in your body, production and growth of cells are also improved. And increased production of cells is what makes your bones longer, thus making you taller.Yoga also stretches your body. This stretching decompresses your body and once your body is relieved of the pressure applied on your back, the cartilage on your spine can start to thicken and lengthen. And this increased in the volume of your cartilage has an effect on your height. You actually grow taller because of the decrease in pressure.
Yoga asanas to increase height
Sukhasana. Sukhasana is the basic form of yoga. It is the “centered” position where all the other yoga positions and moves originate. Simply sit on the floor in a cross-legged position and rest your hands, palms up, on your knees. Keep your breathing controlled at a deep and even pace. Make sure your spine is perfectly aligned. Press your buttocks down on the floor and gently lower your knees. Take at least 5 deep breaths and inhale while you raise your arms up above your head. Then bring them slowly down as you exhale. Repeat this for 5 to 7 times.
Trikonasana. Trikonasana is also known as the Triangle. This is slightly more complex than the Sukhasana. Trukonasa improves your sense of balance, which helps you have good posture. And like Sukhasana, it is a good form of exercise to relieve tension and to center your body. Just stand with your feet at about 3 to 4 feet apart. Make sure that your feet are parallel to each other, and then rotate your left foot 90 degrees outward and your right foot 45 degrees inward. Inhale and raise your arms to your sides so that they are parallel and level with the floor. Exhale then turn your head to face down your left arm and see that your left leg is properly aligned. Take a deep breath and stretch towards your left ankle while tilting your left hip down. And once you have reached the maximum stretch, rotate your arms and let your left hand rest against the inside of your calf, while your right arm reaches for the ceiling. Turn your head, facing the direction of your right arm, and take several deep breaths. Inhale and straighten your body. Then exhale and lower your arms. Move your feet to face forward again. And repeat the actions on your right side.
There are other yoga positions and movements that can help increase height. Simple breathing exercises can already help make you grow taller by reducing stress, which in turn increases the production of the human growth hormone (HGH). But whatever form you may try to improve on your height, be sure to follow the directions properly to prevent accidents and to get optimum results.

What are the Symptoms of Gonorrhea?

WipeDrivePro

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that is highly contagious, and is also referred to as the clap. The clap was coined in reference to a treatment used earlier to clear a blockage caused by gonorrhea pus, and is present in the urethra. In this treatment, the penis is “clapped” simultaneously on both sides, thus the nickname the clap. As described in the treatment process, gonorrhea is characteristically marked by a thick discharge from the penis or even from the vagina. But what are the symptoms of gonorrhea.
It is not uncommon for gonorrhea to have no symptoms or signs, especially in women, at a certain period in time. This period, called the incubation period, usually lasts for 2 to 14 days. This is because gonorrhea usually does not develop or cause symptoms until other areas of the body have already been infected.

Symptoms in Women

Women usually have mild symptoms, so mild in fact that they are usually mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. Other symptoms are painful and/or frequent urination. Women with gonorrhea may also experience anal itching with pain, bleeding, or discharge. Others also have signs of an abnormal vaginal discharge. And sometimes, an abnormal vaginal bleeding may be experienced during or after sex, or even between periods. There is also genital itching present and an irregular menstrual bleeding is also not uncommon in women with gonorrhea.
Other symptoms of gonorrhea in women include a lower abdominal or belly pain. There are also signs of general tiredness and fever for those infected. Bartholin glands, or glands at the opening of the vagina, also become inevitably painful and swollen. This leads to a rather painful sexual intercourse. Rare symptoms of sore throat and pinkeye or conjunctivitis are also observable.

Symptoms in Men

Men with gonorrhea have symptoms usually more obvious than those symptoms found in women. The symptoms become observable enough, allowing men to seek an early medical treatment prior to any complications that may occur. However, there are still men that have mild or even no symptoms at all.
The usual symptoms of gonorrhea in men are an abnormal discharge from the penis, and a painful and/or frequent urination. The discharge in men is characteristically and initially clear or milky. Then the discharge turns to yellow and creamy, and sometimes becoming excessive and blood-tinged. Aside from the discharge and painful or frequent urination, there is also an anal itching that comes with pain, bleeding or any discharge. Men may also experience rare symptoms of sore throat and pinkeye.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea that has Spread

When the infection has spread to other parts of the body, symptoms of gonorrhea will already include rashes, arthritis or joint pains, and inflamed tendons

Home Remedies for Acne Scars

Acne is a big nuance. Nobody wants to have their face dotted with pimples, or even just a single zit. So we end up popping our pimples to get rid of lumps on our face. However, this usually just leads to problems worse than having acne. We end up having acne scars. And just like any other scar, it takes a long time before it fades away, if it will fade away. So, how do you remove these unsightly acne scars from your face? Here are some home remedies for acne scars.

Lemon Juice

Simply squeeze out the juice of fresh lemons. And use a cotton ball to apply the freshly squeezed juice on your acne scars. Let it stand for a few minutes so that the skin truly absorbs the juice before rinsing it off with water. Apply this treatment after washing your face with your chosen facial wash.
Lemon juice is a known lightening agent. The juice lightens the scars and other blemishes making them less visible. Lemon juice is also known as a cure for acne. Less acne mean less appearances of scars. But if you don’t have lemon juice, lime juice would also work since they mainly have the same properties.

Olive Oil

After cleaning your face with water and your chosen facial wash, apply olive oil on the scarred areas of your face. Use olive oil as a facial moisturizer by massaging the oil onto your face.

Ice

A very simple home remedy for acne scars and skin problems is ice. Ice soothes irritated skin, tightens pores, and gives your skin an even texture. It does not directly remove acne scars but it minimizes the appearance of the
acne and the chances of you having scars.

>Rosewater and Sandalwood Paste

Sandalwood has a soothing and cooling effect on the skin. And this can help remove acne scars. All you have to do is to make a paste out of rosewater and sandalwood. Apply the paste on the affected area as a facial mask. Leave the paste on your face for at least an hour. You can also leave it on overnight if you want. Then rinse off the paste with water.

Tomato

Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin A. And vitamin A controls the production of sebum that causes acne. Vitamin A also has antioxidant qualities that refresh and renew damaged and scarred skin. Due to the vitamin A present, tomatoes prevent the formation of acne and of scars. And all you really need to do is to slice up a tomato and place the slices over your face. Leave them on for several minutes.

Homemade Face Mask

Here is one greatly effective face mask that you can make at home. All you need are 1 tablespoon of sour cream, 1 tablespoon of yogurt, 1 tablespoon of oatmeal, and 2 drops of lemon juice. Mix all of the ingredients and apply the mixture on your face. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before washing it off.

Egg Whites

This may smell bad but egg whites are an effective way to treat acne scars. Just dab some egg whites on your scars using a cotton ball and leave it on overnight.

Honey

If you would pay close attention on the many commercially available facial products, you would notice that a lot of these products have honey as one of the active ingredients. That is because honey is a natural moisturizer. It also helps treat acne scars. You can simply apply some honey on your face as a mask or you can take a specially formulated honey acne scar treatment orally.

Different Types of Multivitamins

Sale! .Com domains just $7.49 from GoDaddy.com

Multivitamins help a person get the complete nutrients needed for a healthy body. But, with many supplements available today, it’s easy for the average person to get confused. To help you get educated as to what type of multivitamin you should purchase for your specific needs, here is a list of the different types of supplements, what you can get from them and what you should remember before buying any.
1. Basic Multivitamins
The basic all-in-one pill contains a complete load of all the vitamins and minerals you need for the whole day as recommended by the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Sciences). Basic multis will be able to benefit your body with what a recommended daily allowance (RDA) table suggests like folic acid and vitamins A, B, C, D and E. The best part is you don’t need to take several tablets a day to get the necessary nutrition. However, there are certain minerals that a multivitamin pill contains as well but somehow do not meet the RDA. Examples of these minerals are calcium, magnesium and iron. You can take additional supplements of these minerals but only under your doctor’s advice.
2. Chewable Multivitamins for Adults
These are like basic multivitamin tablets but the only difference is you can chew them first instead of taking them in whole. This is a great feature especially for someone who doesn’t have the skill of swallowing pills. They also work for those who have a hard time breaking down pills and ending up with a queasy feeling in their stomach. Please take note that adult chewable multivitamins are totally different from those tasty candy-like chewables for kids. Naturally, children’s vitamins do not contain the same amounts of vitamins and minerals that an adult body requires. Sadly, they do not taste anything close to the chewable ones your kid takes.
3. Food-Based Supplements
This type of multivitamins is mainly powdered fruits, vegetables and other food elements combined with vitamins and formed into tablets or capsules. Its advantage is that it lessens the possibility of causing an upset stomach because the vitamins are combined with real food which the body can absorb a lot easier. In effect, food-based supplements are safe to take in even on an empty stomach. You might think that this type of vitamins are the more “natural” stuff but the truth is, they are almost just the equivalent of synthetically manufactured ones.
4. Specific Multivitamins
Specific multis are specially formulated for a targeted condition like pregnancy or for someone who is going through a certain condition like osteoporosis, eye problems or heart disease. For these people, there are certain vitamins and nutrients that their bodies need more or need less. A good example is a pregnant female who needs to take pre-natal vitamins that contain higher amounts of folic acid which helps prevent defects on babies. What you need to keep in mind about specially-formulated multivitamins, especially the ones made for joint problems, is that they do not have enough scientific proof to back up their therapeutic claims. Even if they are not harmful in general but it is best to seek your doctor’s approval before including them in your daily diet.
5. Multivitamins for Women
These are enhanced vitamins that contain higher levels of nutrients specifically needed by a woman’s body. Women’s multis may come in different formulations for certain age groups. But in general, this type of vitamins can definitely give any female the required daily allowance of nutrients such as calcium, iron and folic acid. For women aged 50 and above, you will notice that it contains more iron and vitamins E and C. Make sure that you ingest these tablets with a full stomach because iron can rub your stomach the wrong way.
6. Multi-Pill Packs

These are individually packed tablets of different vitamins and minerals that should work collectively. Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium are just some of the good stuff that is not regularly included in basic multivitamins but can be found in multi-pill packs of multivitamins.
7. Powdered Multivitamins
This kind of multivitamins is like powdered juice that you have to mix with fluid, but the difference is it has a bitter aftertaste. One tablespoon to be mixed with water, fruit juice or smoothie can go a long way since it’s already packed with nutrients that you can get from a number of tablets. Multivitamins in powder form contain nutrients that can be absorbed a lot easier by the body compared to tablets that contain binding agents and fillers that make it harder for the body to break down.

3 Natural Treatments for Thinning Hair

www.keller-sports.de

The more scientists learn about male pattern baldness, the clearer it becomes that genetics are one of the main contributors to hair loss. Some of us are genetically predisposed to start thinning in our 20s, some of us in our 40s, and some of us never at all. When this predisposition is genetic, it unfortunately cannot be changed without very expensive medical intervention, usually involving laser treatments, transplants, or hair grafts.
But what we have to remember is that predisposition is never a sure bet. If you are predisposed to hair loss, you can still keep your scalp in good shape by living a healthy lifestyle and not engaging in any behaviors that do damage to the scalp or otherwise contribute to hair loss.

If you want to increase your chances of keeping your hair, try these natural treatments for hair loss:
1. Herbal supplements: There are several types of herbs and herb complexes that have been found to decrease hair loss. While they may not be able to restore hair that has already been lost, they can at least slow down the process. Here are a few of the most popular herbal supplements for hair loss:
• Saw palmetto: From the saw palmetto tree that grows in the southeastern U.S., this herb is thought to have the same effects as the prescription drug Propecia, blocking the types of hormones that lead to hair loss.
• Green tea: Like saw palmetto, this herb shifts the hormonal balance within the body and makes the effects of hair loss less severe.
• Other herbal supplements: Other herbs that have been shown to have anti-hair-loss properties include ginger, apple cider vinegar, and licorice extract.
2. Caffeine: Several studies in recent years have shown that topical application of caffeine can have real anti-balding benefits. Since this news became public, several companies have released shampoos that contain caffeine, and this may be the best route for applying caffeine to the scalp. In order for caffeine to be effective, it has to be applied topically. Drinking it doesn’t have the same effect.
3. Lifestyle treatments: Ultimately, the best way to treat hair loss is to live a healthy lifestyle in every possible way. For example, certain types of exercise have the effect of reducing free testosterone in the circulatory system, and this can translate into a decreased risk of baldness. Having a toned and moderately muscular body helps establish the right balance of testosterone.
Meanwhile, reducing stress is always a good idea, and it also helps to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. If you can combine these things with a balanced diet and plenty of exercise, your scalp will thank you.

5 Ways to Beat Summer Weight Gain

House of Nutrition

When we think summer, most of us think outdoor fun. So it seems like we should naturally lose weight over the summer — not gain it.
In reality, though, summer isn't all beach volleyball and water sports. Lots of summer activities can work against our efforts to stay at a healthy weight (campfire s'mores and backyard barbecues, anyone?). The good news is it's easy to avoid problems if we know what to look out for.
Here are 5 ways to beat summer weight gain:
  1. Get going with goals. When we don't have a plan, it's easy to spend summer moving from couch to computer, with regular stops at the fridge. Avoid this by aiming for a specific goal, like volunteering, mastering a new skill, or working at a job. Just be sure to plan for some downtime so you can relax a little!
  2. Stick to a schedule. With school out, we lose our daily routines. If you don't have a specific job or activity to get up for, it's easy to sleep late, watch too much TV, and snack more than usual. Make sure your summer days have some structure — like getting up at the same time each day and eating meals at set times. Plan activities for specific times, like exercising before breakfast, for example. If you have time on your hands, offer to make dinner a couple of nights a week so your family can enjoy a sit-down meal together.
  3. Stay busy. When we're bored, it's easy to fall into a trap of doing nothing and then feeling low on energy. In addition to helping you avoid the cookie jar, filling your days with stuff to do can give you a sense of accomplishment. That's especially true if a dream summer job or planned activity fell through. Limit your screen time — including IM and video games — to no more than 2 hours a day (write it in that schedule you put together!).
  4. Beat the heat. Don't let summer heat put your exercise plans on hold. Move your workout indoors. If a gym isn't your scene, try bowling or an indoor climbing wall. If you love being outdoors, try joining a local pool or move a regular run or soccer game to early morning or evening.
  5. Think about what (and how) you eat. Summer means picnics and barbecues — activities that revolve around an unlimited spread of food. Pace yourself. Don't overload your plate. Avoid going back for seconds and thirds. Choose seasonal, healthy foods like fresh fruit instead of high-sugar, high-fat desserts. Make catching up with family and friends your focus, not the food. Another good tip for summer eating is to limit frozen treats like ice cream to no more than once a week.

Osteoporosis & Natural Progesterone

www.keller-sports.de

Osteoporosis is a disorder in which progressive bone mass loss and demineralization increase ones risk of fracture. This condition permits us to observe how prescription progestins and estrogens compare to Natural Progesterone.

The standard medical protocol for osteoporosis is to use estrogen, (commonly synthesized from pregnant mare’s urine), in spite of the fact that the most authoritative medical textbooks do not support it.

The following article illustrates:

"Estrogens decrease bone resorption" but "associated with the decrease in bone resorption is a decrease in bone formation. Therefore, estrogens should not be expected to increase bone mass."** Scientific American's Updated Medicine Text, 1991.
Bone tissue should be broken down and rebuilt continuously, just like all of the cells in our body. This process takes place when Osteoclasts help to dissolve old bone tissue, while osteoblasts stimulate new bone growth. Because estrogen has a rate limiting effect on Osteoclasts, Estrogen Dominance delays the breakdown of bone tissue but does not support bone building (osteoblast function).

Bone is a dynamic tissue that is constantly being reshaped by osteoblasts, which build bone, and osteoclasts, which resorb bone. Consequently, estrogens only slow down bone loss, not promote the formation of new bone tissue.
Maintaining proper levels of natural hormones, giving due attention to dietary choices, dietary calcium, managing stress and regular exercise are proven choices for the informed woman.

  • Keep the bedroom quiet when sleeping.
  • Keep the bedroom dark enough. Use dark blinds or wear an eye mask if needed.

What about sleeping pills?

Sleeping pills main render you unconscious, but do not promote deep, restful, delta rhythm sleep. They are mainly used to treat the short term insomnia that may occur as a result of temporary stress. Sleeping pills that you can buy at the store are usually not effective. If you are older, taking over-the-counter sleeping pills may be risky, because they can cause confusion.

If your doctor decides to prescribe a sleeping pill and you decide to take it, use it only as directed. Taking more pills than prescribed will not make you sleep better. Under most conditions, sleeping pills should not be taken for more than two weeks, as they will probably make insomnia worse.

Are there any precautions I should take when using sleeping pills?

Sleeping pills cause drowsiness and poor balance, so be careful about driving or doing other activities that may be dangerous. Don't drink alcohol when taking sleeping pills.

If you're older, you're more likely to fall if you are taking sleeping pills. If you have to get up at night to go to the bathroom, get up slowly, sit on the side of the bed for a minute, and then walk carefully to the bathroom. Use good light. Either turn on the lights or use a bright flashlight.

Metabolic Syndrome

Der coolste Klinglton auf Deinem handy!

Today's youngsters may be the first generation of children to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents--and the reason is obesity. People don't die just from being overweight. They die from the many things that come with it. The majority of overweight children and teenagers already have at least one additional heart disease risk factor, and 25% have two or more. If they have three out of five major risk factors, they are said to have something called metabolic syndrome, a condition that has been identified as a significant marker for heart disease risk.
The five risk factors are high blood pressure (hypertension), high triglycerides, low HDL ("good" cholesterol), abdominal obesity and high fasting blood sugar. If you've got any three of them, you've got metabolic syndrome.
The best way to avoid metabolic syndrome is to concentrate on eating natural, whole foods. Fresh fruit is better than juice. Grilled chicken is better than breaded and fried chicken tenders. Water is better than soda. Nuts are better than chips. The less processed a food is, the more work the body does to digest the carbohydrate, leading to a less severe rise in insulin.
The best approach to decreasing metabolic syndrome may be prevention. Children should be encouraged to develop a healthy lifestyle that includes a quality whole-foods diet, regular physical activity and less sitting around watching television or playing computer games.

Stress

Viking

Stress is caused by the body's instinct to defend itself. This instinct is good in emergencies, like getting out of the way of a speeding car but it can cause physical symptoms if it goes on for too long in response to life's daily challenges and changes.
When this happens, it's as though your body gets ready to jump out of the way of the car, but you are sitting still. Your body is working overtime, with no place to put the extra energy. This can make you feel anxious, afraid, worried and uptight.
Any sort of change can make you feel stressed, even good change. It's not just the change or event itself, but also how you react to it that matters. What may be stressful is different for each person--one person may not feel stressed by retiring from work and another person may feel stressed.
Other things that may be stressful include being laid off from your job, your child leaving or returning home, the death of your spouse, divorce or marriage, an illness, an injury, a job promotion, money problems, moving, or having a baby.
Signs of stress may include anxiety, back pain, constipation or diarrhea, depression, fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, insomnia, problems with relationships, shortness of breath, stiff neck, upset stomach, and weight gain or loss .
To deal with stress, it helps to exercise on a regular basis, eat well-balanced meals, get enough sleep, meditate, and get away from your daily stresses with group sports, social events and hobbies

Brain Food

www.keller-sports.de

The brain is a living organ and is affected by what we eat in the short-term and in the long-term. To simplify, you could say a healthy body equals a healthy brain.
To start the day, eat a balanced breakfast. When waking up from sleeping the body and brain have been in a fast state. If the last meal you ate was finished by 7 p.m. and if you wake up at 7 a.m., it was a 12-hour fast. It helps the brain function to have a balanced breakfast after that 12 hours. Balanced means not too high in calories, not too high in sugar, and has some protein, some fiber, and some fat (such as eggs, whole wheat toast with butter, and orange juice). That kind of breakfast will keep you alert until lunch.
A good way to prevent Alzheimer's is eat fish two to three times a week. Some fish that contain omega-3s are mackerel, salmon, and sardines.
A study in Switzerland discovered that people in their 60s who had the highest blood levels of vitamin C and beta-carotene scored higher on memory tests than those with low levels. In almost all cases the people in the study got the vitamin C and beta-carotene from food, not supplements. Foods with beta-carotene are yellow, orange, and dark green vegetables and foods with vitamin C are citrus fruits, berries, and fresh peppers. Blueberries are in a class by themselves for the benefits they provide to the brain and other parts of the body.
Asparagus, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, lentils, kidney beans, and pinto beans are just a few foods that will supply you with folic acid, another nutrient necessary for proper brain function.

The Cheapest Way to Fix and Maintain Good Health

www.keller-sports.de

If you want a "pill" to fix your heart, try exercise. Physical therapy used on people after a heart attack enables them to live longer than those who do get no therapy. Research using rats has shown that exercise can even be more effective than statins, the drugs normally used to treat heart disease.
Research has found that exercise sparks the creation of new heart vessels. In a study of 37 people at Leipzig University in Germany, Dr. Robert Hollriegel found that people with serious heart failure who rode a bike for up to 30 minutes a day for four months produced new stem cells in their bones. Those in the study who exercised also had more small blood vessels in their muscles. Those who didn't exercise had no change in their vessels or muscles.
The way it works is that physical activity strains the heart's arteries and muscles by sending 10 times the normal amount of blood to the muscles being used. Then stem cells are sent to relieve this stress and may repair any damaged parts. If the exercise is continued, the stem cells help the body adapt to the stress by building new blood vessels and strengthening muscles. To maintain the benefits of the new blood vessels and stronger muscles, the exercise must be done on a regular basis.

Vitamin D to Reduce the Risk of Heart Attacks

Men deficient in vitamin D seem to have a higher risk of heart attacks than men whose blood levels of vitamin D are adequate. Medical records and blood samples of 454 men between the ages of 40 and 75 who had fatal or nonfatal heart attacks between January 1993 and January 2004 were compared with 900 men who had no history of cardiovascular disease. The vitamin D connection remained significant even after researchers adjusted for such heart disease risk factors as family history of heart attacks, body mass index, alcohol consumption, physical activities, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, omega 3 intake and ethnicity. The study was conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The results suggest that current recommendations for vitamin D intake need to be increased to boost blood levels of vitamin D high enough to benefit health, the authors said. The study showed that men whose blood levels of vitamin D were 15 nanograms per milliliter or less were at increased risk. Sufficient blood levels of vitamin D were 30 nanograms per milliliter or more.

Honey for Wounds

www.keller-sports.de

An ancient scroll was found in Egypt that listed medical case histories, recorded around 3000 B.C. Case #3 described treatment for an acute head wound: after stitching the wound shut, oil and honey were applied to prevent infection.
Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand have written, "Honey has been used since ancient times as a remedy in wound care. Evidence from animal studies and some trials has suggested honey may accelerate wound healing." The results they found show that in acute wounds (burns, lacerations) honey had a significant effect. In some moderate wounds where damage to nerves and blood vessels occurred, healing time was reduced by as much as five days compared to conventional treatments. The use of honey in chronic wounds (diabetic ulcers, arterial and venous ulcers, pressure ulcers, and infected surgical wounds) did not significantly increase healing time compared to conventional treatments.
The honey used to treat wounds has to be in the raw state (raw, uncooked does not qualify) because honey contains enzymes and nutrients that can be very useful to the body. Unfortunately, heat destroys many of them, and commercial honey is heated to keep it from crystallizing inside processing machinery. You can find raw honey in the natural food section of your grocery store or at your local health food store. Get honey from local sources--the honey gathered closest to your home is the best for you.

Skin Care Product Ingredients to Avoid

Sale! .Com domains just $7.49 from GoDaddy.com

Your skin is much more than an outer surface to cover bones and muscles--it's the largest organ of your body. Your skin protects your internal organs from injury; helps detoxify wastes through perspiration; is an important line of immune defense against infections--a barrier to viruses and bacteria; protects you against extreme changes in temperature, through its thermoregulatory effect of controlling heat flow between you and your environment; produces and stores vitamin D (important to your immune system); rich in receptors to allow you to sense conditions around you like hard/soft and hot/cold and send information to your brain so you can react to it for self-preservation; protects your body from sunburns and dehydration.
There are many ingredients in personal care products that are harmful to the body. When you put those products on your skin, it will absorb those ingredients. Those harmful ingredients are:
Mineral Oil, Paraffin, and Petrolatum: Petroleum products that coat the skin like plastic, clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins, which in turn accumulate and can lead to dermatologic issues. Slows cellular development, which can cause you to show earlier signs of aging. Suspected cause of cancer. Disruptive of hormonal activity.
Parabens: Widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic industry (including moisturizers). An estimated 13,200 cosmetic and skin care products contain parabens. Studies implicate their connection with cancer. They have hormone-disrupting qualities (mimicking estrogen) and interfere with the body's endocrine system.
Phenol carbolic acid: Found in many lotions and skin creams. Can cause circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma and even death from respiratory failure.
Propylene glycol:Used as a moisturizer in cosmetics and as a carrier in fragrance oils. Shown to cause dermatitis, kidney or liver abnormalities, and may inhibit skin cell growth or cause skin irritation.
Acrylamide: Found in many hand and face creams. Linked to mammary tumors in lab research.
Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES): Found in car washes, engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners... and in over 90% of personal care products! SLS breaks down the skin's moisture barrier, easily penetrates the skin, and allows other chemicals to easily penetrate. Combined with other chemicals, SLS becomes a "nitrosamine", a potent class of carcinogen. It can also cause hair loss. SLES is sometimes disguised with the labeling "comes from coconut" or "coconut-derived."
Toluene: Poison! Danger! Harmful or fatal if swallowed! Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Made from petroleum or coal tar, and found in most synthetic fragrances. Chronic exposure linked to anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage, and may affect a developing fetus. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) contains toluene. Other names may include benzoic and benzyl.
Dioxane: Found in compounds known as PEG, Polysorbates, Laureth, ethoxylated alcohols. Common in a wide range of personal care products. The compounds are usually contaminated with high concentrations of highly volatile 1,4-dioxane, easily absorbed through the skin. Dioxane's carcinogenicity was first reported in 1965 and later confirmed in studies including one from the National Cancer Institute in 1978. Nasal passages and liver are the most vulnerable. Dioxane is easily removed during the manufacturing process by "vacuum stripping." Warning: It is a synthetic derivative of coconut. Watch for hidden language on labels, such as "comes from coconut."
